Enter Sandman

Wop Wop Wop you got going on Sunday? Want to hang out at the famous Apollo Theater?

See me perform on behalf of the TriBeCa Performing Arts Center* at The Apollo’s Open House Weekend, sponsored by Target**, Sunday February 6th at 1:30PM. But you don't have to wait until Sunday. The open house begins on Sat Feb 5th, and you'll see all kinds of organizations represented. What a wonderful way to celebrate Black History Month by visiting a historic black landmark where you can see a pretty black lady tell jokes!

I don't think anyone will be able to tap dance me off since it's not televised, but there will be a panel of judges, and unless it's my family, talking into a banana won't make them like me. So I have to bring the big guns. (Larger bananas).

All of this is a precursor to a fabulous show I will host starring Leighann Lord.

Brushes with Celebrity (Impersonations)

Performed as Sarah Silverman on Schtick or Treat last week. I had a blast! Mindy Tucker (of With Reservation) took such great photos I posted mine on Twitter. Then, to my geeky delight, Ms. Silverman herself gave it her nod of approval!

Speaking of attention from celebrities, I heard Steve Buscemi admired my obscure Halloween costume of "Dionne Warwick on Hollywood Squares" while I marched in the annual Halloween parade in Park Slope. I missed him because I am a big shot, but I turned around and saw him enjoying the rest of the parade in his baseball cap.

Do you hear that plopping sound? That's me name-dropping.

Here's Dionne up close. The secret to her unique nostrils is buttons.

Other Halloween weekend festivities included a costume party, a clothing exchange at my place, pumpkin-carving, the toasting of pumpkin seeds, the hotting of chocolate, and the watching of the new Nightmare on Elm Street. I can't top this year, so next year I plan to join a religion that does not permit me to celebrate the holiday. I'll take your suggestions in the comments section.

Schtick or Treat 2010

The Halloween fun continues! Halloween is like my Christmas. I want to celebrate it all month long and ignorantly wish good tidings to the people who don't observe it.

For the 3rd Annual Schtick or Treat I am deciding AGAINST shaving my head and wearing dude clothes as Robert Schimmel and instead am buying a ponytail weave and wearing dude clothes so I can impersonate Sarah Silverman. To prepare, I have read her new book The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption and Pee, and I will re-live the magic of "Jesus Is Magic" by watching clips of that on YouTube (since someone has borrowed my dvd copy). Ultimately, I will look like Sade, sound like Downtown Julie Brown, and be gone in 2 minutes. But do you expect anything LESS than butt-tingling entertainment from this smooth operator?

Be There or Be Scared!

Tonight is The Living Room Show's 5th Annual Halloween Scare-avaganza!

Let's look at years past...

In 2006 I made the topical choice of going as US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Luke went as James Brolin as Pee-Wee Herman. Since these are so obscure, I'll give you their actual likeness.

NAILED IT. The only other person to dress up was my sister who went as Condoleezza's lesser-known sister, Condosleezza with a mullet wig and fishnet stockings, because my family is awesome.

In 2007 I went as a cabbage patch (the black one with blond hair that never sold well) and Luke went as John McEnroe. That year, the baristas joined in the costume fun and the one audience member who dressed up won a prize!

In 2008 I returned to celebrity impersonations and went as Kathy Griffin. I have no idea what Luke was supposed to be. But what a phantom-tastic turnout of costumed creeps! Comics and audience dressed up and were given prestigious awards.

In 2009 I held down the fort solo and took all the pics (which explains why they're not uploaded one year later). I dressed as a victim of the Bubonic Plague. Had the Elizabethan dress and wig, zombie facepaint and the creepiness was exacerbated by the fact that NO ONE ELSE DRESSED FOR HALLOWEEN.

So let's do this fifth one right! Oh yes, there WILL be prizes.

Some People Never Change (Their Shirt)

My mom gave me the gift of a lovely and colorful long-sleeve shirt this past Valentine's Day.

I liked it because it felt familiar. The turquoise, the bright pinks, the subliminal floral pattern...where have I seen it before?

Baby, It's Cold Outside, The Untold Story

In December 2007, I gave you a new take on this old classic, acting out the potential menacing tone of the lyrics to Dean Martin's "Baby It's Cold Outside." One year later, I performed it at the Delusions of Spandex show at Parkside Lounge.

Alas, great minds think alike...but I like my version better.

Resolutions

Happy New Year!

I went party-hopping in Washington, DC and finished with home-made chicken and waffles at 3:00AM. I resolve to eat more chicken and waffles on special occasions. Like breakfast.

Actually I resolved to write more this year. Jokes, blog posts, website contributions, sketches, love letters, thank you notes, journal entries, comics, clever Post-its, twitter tweets, e-mails, and messages in the snow with my urine. The goal of course is to become a well-oiled comedy machine, a human fortune cookie with a wise idea at all hours of the day. It may be the key to earning a living as a writer. Or at least becoming a darling of the open mic scene.

At the very least it will enhance the quality of my vows.

What's YOUR resolution?

The First Step is Admitting You Have a Problem

Last weekend I went to a friend's house to attend a cookie-making party. Despite receiving an informative e-mail, I did not know we were baking tasty gifts for others. I thought I was signing up for an All-You-Can-Eat dessert buffet. By the end of the session we had four kinds of cookies, two kinds of fudge and one kind of swirled chocolate-peppermint bark. Then we were handed many colorful gift bags. I took the bags home, for later assembly, as they instructed.

Even though I now grasp the concept of giving the cookies away, I have done nothing but eat them all week long. I don't think there are enough left to make an appropriate gift bag now. What's worse, I told Luke to stay away from them so I could give them away. He hasn't had one yet.

My name is Abbi Crutchfield, and I am the human cookie monster.

M.I.A. and Labor Day

I will be gone for the weekend, so there is no use checking back here to see if I will be on the cast of next season's Dancing with the Stars. In the mean time, you can watch one of my favorite non-dancing stars, M.I.A. of "Pineapple Express Soundtrack" fame (or if you're an indie music follower, you know her from your dreams). This is a new impression unleashed at Delusions of Spandex sketch show.

Roll That Beautiful Bean Footage

Buddies

My best friend Olga came in town to help me celebrate my birthday early.

Two disclaimers about the above photo.
1) That sweater was free from a clothing swap, and looks better on stage than at a fancy restaurant
2) We are college buddies, but in pictures we always look like Rosie O'Donnel and her wife. I'm the Rosie, because I'm a hilarious comedian, and Olga has the child-bearing hips.

We stopped by a trendy Vietnamese restaurant in Tribeca to say hi to her new buddy, the chef de cuisine who is currently competing on a popular reality show. To refrain from being tacky, I will not mention the guy or the place he works. But I hope no one SPIKEs my MAI-tai while I dance to HOUSE music. Because that's the best way to get secrets out of me.

Our handsome host greeted us and offered to select the entire meal for us, since all we could think of to request was napkins and white wine. I will now take you through the fantastic courses, since your last classy meal was the new chicken sandwich at McDonalds.

Salad

We began the meal with two salads. Raw Artichoke salad and Spicy Beef Pomelo (with rau ram herb, chile and lime) which tasted simultaneously like miracles and burning. I could have made a meal out of it, if not for the passing out from the intense heat every 12 seconds. A waiter asked, "How is everything, WIMPS?" and when I laughed a huge flame came out of my mouth. His hair stood up straight, his face was blackened, and when he blinked it sounded like two piano keys.

Then out came the Seared Sea Scallops with a very special side of black rice vermicelli...

Seared Scallops

or as it's more commonly known by my friend Klyde: mouse penis.

It was time to freshen up the drink I hadn't touched, by accompanying it with a Red River house cocktail. (smacking of lips) Do I detect...hibiscus?

Drinks

We were giggling like children--drunk children--and making eyes at the empty stools of the bar when our entrees arrived.

Roasted Black Cod anyone?

Roasted Black Cod

No, I'll have the Ten Spice Baby Back Ribs, thank you.

Ten Spice Baby Back Ribs

There was a separate plate of Wok-Seared Asparagus which was so good it deserves its own blog post, but I'm not a vegan, so we'll pretend like it was just a side dish for now.

We didn't want the meal to end, but you don't tell chocolate mousse to wait in the kitchen.
Chocolate Mousse

Then God spoke and what materialized in front of me was an almond banana cake with black sesame ice cream on top of a bed of tapioca.

Almond Banana Cake with Sesame IceCream and Tapioca

What's that? You're tired of my blurry pictures, and want to SEE the tapioca?

Vietnamese coffee kept us awake and alert, all through a slow train ride and looong walk home, the movie Red Eye, and all its DVD extras.

Vietnamese Coffee

Slurp

Celebrating like a wealthy adult was a nice rite of passage into this new age, but unfortunately for us, after chatting with us at our table several times, our chef mysteriously disappeared, so we could not thank him properly. Maybe we shouldn't have told him we were off to watch Red Eye.

FLASHBACK:
We both went to see comedian Godfrey perform at our college once. He welcomed people on stage after the show to meet and greet, and he asked if we knew of any parties. We told him we were off to watch a movie rental from the library. He frowned and said, "Uh...you mean there's a party in the library?" Before you could say sweat pants, two girls in miniskirts pushed us out of the way to give him a deep-tissue massage with their eyes and coo their own private invitation.

So allow me to make up for turning away any potential fans and make a sensual statement of my own: You, me, my place, Red Rivers, mouse genitalia.

Happy Talentods Day

The fact that my cell phone refused to spell Valentine's Day during texting warned me that this would be an exceptionally unromantic holiday.

If you can't bake homemade, heart-shaped pizzas with the one you love you may as well laugh really hard with your friends. There were a lot of V-day-themed comedy shows to choose from on the 14th, but I opted for the one I was in. And perhaps my phone was right--this would be a day of TALENT no matter how ODd.

The Bacivo Nuggets put on an Anti-Valentine's Day show to remember! Composed of Marcus Terry, Andy Kleiman and Jake Serlen, this all-testosterone sketch troupe added even more Axe body spray by inviting The Straight Men (Barry Rothbart, Mike Ennis and Rob O'Reilly) and special guest Cody Hess. The result was an amalgamation of original sketches, monologues and short films that had the walls of Rififi echoing with titters.

Three of the evening's performances were perfected by my presence. Even though I was a prison guard, an office temp and a straphanger, they let me wear my bright red, two-piece ensemble that I had on from work. Because guys don't care if you look like Laura Bush, ladies! They just don't.

Luke enjoyed the show from the audience, and after getting over a brief spat before the night even began (I made fun of some gal and he in turn made fun of ME. Get behind me Satan!) we decided to make an attempt at romance with a dinner for two. We were THIS close to Amalfi, the famed Italian restaurant that gets 5 stars from every co-worker I talk to. Instead we went a few doors down to the corner barbecue joint. It took a half hour to get menus and water, and a full hour after that to get food. And there were only eight other people eating. The food came out black--corn, ribs, fried chicken, CORN. We were so hungry there was not going to be the option of sending it back, and we saw the waiter so rarely we had no one to complain to but the people next to us who liked black corn. One of those diners being local music sensation Jerome Jordan.

The very next day the restaurant closed, and it all made sense why the chef was asleep while cooking, the place was completely out of seafood, the waiter was in pajamas and nobody noticed when I accidentally dropped BOTH eating utensils over the course of the meal. So ends the day that would have been Valentine's, and the curse that came with it.

Lite Bust

I won a Lite Brite at a White Elephant party, and in the spirit of Christmas, I will now complain about my presents.

I originally chose this toy to recapture my youth, but oh how times have changed. Or they haven't changed enough. I'm a little bummed that their supposed upgrade to "Flat Screen" does not come with Tivo or HD. What's worse, the surrounding monitor is thick and red instead of thin and white, so it takes away from the art I so painstakingly made. Instead of having the actual board be black, it comes with flimsy black paper templates, so you get a picture you can only make once (because when you remove the colored pegs, the instructions on which colors to use are punched through. That's like taking a subway map, and covering over each stop with a black Sharpie once you have visited it).

If you don't use the template, the red board glows brighter than the pegs. And let's talk about the pegs! (audience applause) They're bigger than they used to be. Usually when you grow up, a toy feels smaller in your hand, not bigger. Did I shrink? Or is someone trying to make sure this choking hazard does the job quickly?

My original Lite Brite plugged into the wall, and turned on or off.

This new one has a 3 minute timer. So it tells ME when it's time to stop playing. I don't think so LB. And what's that I see? The 1967 version came with tackle boxes of colors? How convenient. The new one has a rolodex compartment in the front that gets stuck, and the pegs come flying out as you jerk it open. Also, the holes on the original were very close together, providing endless possibilities of what you spelled or designed. The new one has holes a mile apart, so the only thing I can make is a smiley emoticon.

Call me Mom, but the pegs still get all over the place.

The good thing about a White Elephant party is you get to swap until you find something you like. You pick a number, and on your turn pick from the grab bag of presents or swap that chance for something that's already been opened. I could have brought home the blue and black Nunchucks I briefly had...

or this post could have been called Chocolate Dong.

Attention Disgruntled Target Employees

With a show this good, for a crowd not to be there is wrong. It's like displaying the Hope diamond in a backyard to stuffed animals.

Don't be a stuffed animal!

The Living Room is back and better than ever with our sole show for the entire month! Luke and I have been beating the elves and polishing the bells on the sleigh for this Holiday Extravaganza. In addition to Luke's stellar stand-up set, my news segment and a super-secret performance, we are welcoming:

Vince Averill (Western Canada Tour)

Hadiyah Robinson (BET's ComicView)

Moody McCarthy (NBC's Last Comic Standing; ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live)

a sketch by Phaea and Becca (Delusions of Spandex)

and your host with more profit than Superbad has grossed: Matt Little (Matt Little's Big Show)!

Fa la la la laaaa French Vanilla

Someone took pity on me knowing I can't decorate and gave me a foil tree. In the spirit of giving I have something for YOU: I gots a new website in the works!

I'm excited about it, and it's coming along nicely. It involves Willy Wonka technology, in that you won't just SEE a picture of a cupcake, you'll be able to grab it and eat it. And if you see a little boy in a white suit who shoots off toy guns and watches too much t.v. you'll be able to put him in your purse.

Holiday Decor-fake-shuns

I have always scoffed at giant, inflatable lawn ornaments and ceramic Nativity scenes, but for some reason, this Christmas, I am interested in transforming my studio. This notion comes at the same time I'm trying to tighten my belt because of the whole not-being-employed-during-the-shopping-season thing.

I spent two hours at Target and had buyer's remorse just looking at stuff. I walked around with a $14 set of glued wooden blocks that spelled, "Merry Christmas". After holding it for a while, I realized the M was upside down. It said, "Werry Christmas." That made me want it more, but I knew at the check-out I would have wanted to haggle for the misspelling. "No one is going to buy this. I'll give you fifty cents for it." Since all Targets of the world could burn down and they'd still have enough money to rebuild them with roller coasters inside, they don't change the price of anything.

I picked up and put down forty more items, and finally left with a red ribbon for my door. On the way home I saw a pile of loose branches by the Christmas trees. Remembering my creative roots (I once made a car for my Barbie out of a Kleenex box), I asked the vendor if I could take some of the branches home. She said yes, if I made a donation. I heard Chris Rock's voice in my head, "How much for a soda? How about if I take a sip for 15 cents? F[orget] the cup, just pour it in my hand for a dime." I said, "Um...how about just the brown ones...away from the pile, on the ground?" She sighed and told me I could pick from the pile. Then she offered me a bag to carry them. Then a sandwich.

I put the ribbon on my door and the sack of branches in a corner. My house looks exactly the same, and I am overwhelmed by this pressure. I decide that's good for this year.

So relax. Maybe it's not taste holding you back from decorating, but laziness.

Happy Over-eating

In honor of the holiday, friendly forwards, and the dvd of Follow That Bird that I found at the bottom of a $5 bin, here is a picture of seasonal fellowship.

I was prepared to live-blog the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but the ridiculous staging sucked all of the comedy out of me. How can I top 23 year old baton twirlers, bored audience members or Willard Scott chattering animatedly to the camera with no audio?

I'm sure it was something about Smuckers.

Most out of place award is a three-way tie among:
pre-packaged boy bands (not extinct, it turns out)
ill-conceived balloons (Ronald McDonald?! The Burger King makes better commercials AND a better Halloween costume)
and floats of blonde-haired, blue-eyed Native Americans smiling and singing in their Navajo language. Loose translation: "Thank you for taking our lands. Thank you for cutting off our hands. Thank you for the Black Friday Sale, and mostly for Ashley Tisdale!"

Then hers truly came out on a float and held up a sign explaining that she is not Ashlee Simpson, despite the same nose job, malnourished frame, blonde extensions and lack of talent.

It's like a knock-off of a knock-off. That was stolen from you and later returned.

I perked up at the hint of a sneak preview of Xanadu. Finally, I get to see what this musical is about! The cast comes out on roller skates, wheels around and sings some Meatloaf ballad, the only intelligible word of which is Xanaduuuu. Apparently it's a giant commercial for Johnny Rockets. Then Tay Zonday burst through my living room singing Chocolate Rain, and everything made perfect sense.

On the bright side, my son made his television lipsynching debut.

I am so proud of you, Cordon Bleu.
