My Early Comedy Central Appearance

Comedian John Heffron pointed me in the direction of a clip of one of his Comedy Central specials-- because he majored in split-second Where's Waldo pinpointing, and saw that Luke and I attended the taping. The camera caught me mid-guffaw.

Late Night Republic

There's a fun show that I got to be a part of recently called Late Night Republic. It's hosted by comedy boy wonder-turned-man wonder Jake Sasseville and features lots of NYC's top funny talent*. I contributed as an on-the-street correspondent. Despite the serious Ann Curry face I have when asking questions, I giggled a lot that day.

My segment is at 9:35-11:00, sandwiched between two hilarious bits by Giulia Rozzi and Katina Corrao. (Both funny females have been on The Living Room Show and Positively Awesome, and Giulia was a part of the first lineup for the return of Ladybits, my three favorite shows in the city. Seven Stand-Ups to Watch

Well let's say two, because I happen to have two comedy amigos who are appearing on television in consecutive nights this week.

Seven just sounded better. But why do we take on the mission when we're told about People to Watch? It's impossible to keep an eye out for comedians' televised accomplishments. They happen so sporadically.

That's why today I tweeted:

Props 2 Calise Hawkins 4 her Com Central debut! If I went to a party for every friend on TV I'd go 3-4 times every 2.5 years.

It's like catching a shooting star. That's not to suggest comedians don't appear on TV often. They appear ALL THE TIME. In your commercials (Matt McCarthy for Verizon), giving editorial on programs for old people (Louis CK on CBS Sunday Morning), making commentary on MTV (Matt Ruby) or performing in sketches on VH1 (me two years ago). They are extras on the Food Network (Adam Ruben), they teach improv on American Chopper (Roger Hailes, Brooke VanPoppelen), they compete in contests (Dave Lester) they sometimes pose as guests on talk shows (Rick Younger, Carolyn Castiglia, Adam Newman, Sean Patton, Sean O'Connor...)

Fine, you want seven? Here are 5 more comedians to watch.

My friend Ana in San Juan emailed me to ask if that girl with curly hair on my blog has a Home Goods commercial.

You're huge in Puerto Rico.

How cool! (For the record, I define cool as someone throwing a ball of paper in a trash can three feet away.) I have received lots of nice words on Facebook about this television appearance. You might remember when I wrote about shooting it. Since I have no pictures of it, here is a story board, as it has been described to me.

Flow Real Though

On The Tyra Show today!

The theme is "Go With the Flow", where you can open up and talk about that time of the month. Because it sure beats waiting for your mother to take you out on a paddle boat.

Gaia and Synergy

Same person.

A tween asked me yesterday why children always put their sunglasses on upside down. I told her, "One, because Anne Geddes tells them to. Two, because they don't know any better." I used to confuse bagels and donuts because as a child I was not perceptive enough to tell the difference. Case in point, two cartoons I used to watch as a kid, Captain Planet and Jem, both had what I thought was the same character on it. They both had flowing purple hair, weird headbands, and they were both the voice of wisdom whenever the principal characters needed help.

As an adult I found out that the voice on Captain Planet belonged to Whoopi Goldberg, while Synergy was voiced by Marlene Aragon (an actor who also played characters on Transformers, and whose picture is impossible to find). It didn't help my memory to learn that Whoopi Goldberg, in addition to voicing a character named Gaia, later played a character named Guinan on Star Trek.

This is a little like the time I confused Veruka Salt and Fairuza Balk.

But it's not nearly as awkward as the time I confused two people at work.

And now for something truly, truly, truly outrageous.

Live at Gotham

Here we are with comedian Bobby Lee of Mad TV fame. He is the host of an upcoming episode of Comedy Central's Live at Gotham. Neither Luke nor I have taped one, but we were there to support Nick Cobb on one night, and Reese Waters and Wil Sylvince on another.

Bobby was funny on and off the stage, always making faces and striking poses. I saw a girl walk up to him and ask him to do a line from a sketch on Mad TV, and he did it. I'm guessing the pink cover on his phone is one more reason to stand out as a quirky, silly guy. Or maybe he loves pink. Maybe he was on the phone with Pink.
