SPANK You Very Much

On Thurs Jan 13, 2011 at 6:30PM I will debut a solo show at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater:

Not Getting It: Rejection and Resilient Ignorance

On a quest to salvage her ratings, life coach-turned-TV personality Dr. Newberry invites her viewers to participate in a slogan-writing contest. The responses range from death threats to epithets and she couldn't be more honored.

Dr. Newberry is a character I've been performing in the city, and you might be suprised to see which people make up her regular viewing public (hint: other characters I've been performing in the city). Here's a sneak preview to see her in action: clickable link to VIDEO of Dr. Newberry

Directed by the fabulous Kate Tellers

Feminism For Fun

Together with some fabulous comics I'll be on an amazing comedy show by Paradigm Shift, NYC's hardest-working feminist activism group.

In anticipation of our contribution as empowered performers and general buffoons, Michelle Gonzalez interviewed Jessica Delfino, Jen Dziura, Hadiya Robinson, Leah King and yours truly.

Here's my take on what the audience can expect from the show F-word: Feminism, Funny and Fearless:

Firstly, a frightfully fast and furious frenzy of freaky femme fatales! For friendly fun, fear not! Five fabulous females share feel-good fairy tales for a few dollars! Finally, forty flopping flounders fight fifty flying fish for a fiefdom of figs. Phew! (Also a raucous night of comedy...).

Check it out here!

See you at the show!

This Thursday, December 9th, from 7 to 10 pm, head to Angels & Kings @ 500 East 11th Street between Avenue A and B for “F-Word: Feminism, Funny & Fearless! A Fundraiser for Paradigm Shift NYC.”

Attention Women Comics

A mesage from Jen Dziura

Hey ladies,

NYC has a new all-female comedy show!

http://www.ladybitscomedy.com/

Our Kickoff and Press Preview is Wednesday, August 11 at Cornelia St. Cafe, where our press sponsors (TheGloss.com) and other bloggers will be covering a star-studded show featuring Jessica Kirson, Erin Jackson, and Bonnie McFarlane, and hosted by
co-founder Abbi Crutchfield. After that, we start up as a regular weekly show in October, and we're open for booking requests. Also, we'd like to help you publicize yourself via The Internets.

Get booked: http://www.ladybitscomedy.com/booking/

Send all Wednesday 6PM avails WAY into the future. Please also send photo/links/bio -- Abbi's and my bios on http://www.ladybitscomedy.com/vision/ are a good idea of format.

Promoting comics outside of NYC:

We are going to be posting a one-liner-type feature on TheGloss.com once a week, called "Lady Comedians Tell It Like It Is." So, you can submit a single joke along with photo/bio/links in consideration for this feature. Jokes about woman stuff (um, whatever that is) are nice but not necessary.

On the Ladybits site, we'll be posting "One Question Interview" posts. The editorial guideline is simply that the posts must be either funny, or have a "how to" component (or, of course, both).

So, just pick one of these questions, and send me a 1-paragraph-or-more answer, along with the photo/brief bio/links that you want me to use (i.e. What's the most beneficial thing you've done for your comedy career? What's the best piece of advice you'd give to a female comic to get booked on more than bringer shows?)

Send to: jen (at) jenisfamous (dot) com

Thanks!

It's Here! Now Presenting: Ladybits

Jennifer Dziura has launched the Ladybits Website (Ladybitscomedy.com)

This is the info source for our new all-female comedy show making its debut at Cornelia Street Cafe on Wed Aug 11, 2010.

Lineup:
Jessica Kirson
Bonnie McFarlane
Erin Jackson

hosted by Abbi Crutchfield
Price: 1 drink

Frequently asked questions:

Q: Isn't this like Chicks and Giggles?
A: Yes, it was inspired by Chicks and Giggles. Read more.

Q: I'm a guy. Can I perform on the show?
A: YES! Can you bake?

Q: Do you produce every comedy show in the city now?
A: No, just three:

The Living Room Show - since June 2006
Positively Awesome - since January 2010
Ladybits - since August 2010

I used to host "Sunday Soiree" at Botanica Bar for Josh Filipowski, and for a year I ran "Root Hill Mic" at Root Hill Cafe. Producing shows is my favorite way to get stage time, network with comics, and perform in an environment I love (because I designed it). I also love running open mics so I can meet tomorrow's up-and-comers and yesterday's still-won't-leavers. If you host a show or an open mic and would like me to fill in for you, just reach out to me at curlycomedy (at) yahoo (dot) com.

The Woman I'm Afraid of Turning Into

New York Photographer Anya Garrett (who is like the Andy Warhol of our generation) is debuting her exhibit "The Woman I'm Afraid of Turning Into" tonight!

Together with Lisa Levy, she has interviewed a dozen of today's most dazzling funny women (including MEEEEE) to find out what their anxieties are about a career in comedy, and then photograph them portraying their fearsome future. My fear is that I won't have time to raise kids, so I'll focus all my nurturing energy into treating my dog like a person.

(This is me treating my dog like a throw pillow.)

12 Portraits of hilarious and beautiful comedians -- Abbi Crutchfield, Amy Schumer, Ann Carr, Becky Yamamoto, Carolyn Castiglia, Leah Dubie, Livia Scott, Mara Herron, Ophira Eisenberg, Sherri Eldin, as well as the artists themselves Anya Garrett and Lisa Levy.

GRAND OPENING - THURS. 7/15

How is This Legal?

Before it hits your inbox and sounds like a hoax...

Nordstrom is changing the packaging on their "Eyes Lips Face" makeup, so they're selling everything that says "E.L.F." for $1.00!

Cut and past the following website: http://www.eyeslipsface.com/shop.asp

It is fun to try things when you don't have to worry about the cost! They have powder, mascara, brushes, nail polish, you name it .. Just thought I'd pass along the good deal. Also, if you use the coupon code: CAROLINA you will get $7.50 off your first $15 of your purchase.

And to continue this celebration of womanhood I will sing a song we can all relate to:

I'm a girl, and by me that's only great!
I am proud that my silhouette is curvy,
That I walk with a sweet and girlish gait
With my hips kind of swivelly and swervy.

I adore being dressed in something frilly
When my date comes to get me at my place.
Out I go with my Joe or John or Billy,
Like a filly who is ready for the race!

When I have a brand new hairdo

With my eyelashes all in curl,
I float as the clouds on air do,

I enjoy being a girl!

When men say I'm cute and funny

And my teeth aren't teeth, but pearl,

I just lap it up like honey

I enjoy being a girl!

I flip when a fellow sends me flowers,
I drool over dresses made of lace,

I talk on the telephone for hours
With a pound and a half of cream upon my face!

I'm strictly a female-female

And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male

Who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl...like...me.

When men say I'm sweet as candy
As around in a dance we whirl,

It goes to my head like brandy,

I enjoy being a girl!

When someone with eyes that smoulder

Says he loves ev'ry silken curl
That falls on my iv'ry shoulder,

I enjoy being a girl!

When I hear the compliment'ry whistle

That greets my bikini by the sea,

I turn and I glower and I bristle,

But I'm happy to know the whistle's meant for me!

I'm strictly a female-female

And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male

Who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl...like...me.

You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman

Not given enough attention as a kid.

Given too much attention as a kid.

Follows her nose.

Follows her spirit guide.

And Now she's out of a job.

And she's out of touch.

She's all out of face.

This one doesn't really play guitar.

Just a reminder to love yourself, take care of your family, have some standards, be kind to others, remember where you came from, see your beauty within and meet the Muppets.

Monday Night Moments

Had a gig at the top of the week at a favorite venue: Alibi Lounge. It was past my bed time, so I yawned a lot in anticipation. They say dogs yawn when they're afraid.

The show, run by two lovely ladies, Nakia and Nadine, is called Monday Night Moments (LOL Comedy Night), so here are some of the moments from that LOL evening.

Moment 1: Senior Special

I am waiting for other comics to arrive and have yet to meet the host. I order a drink, walk around, and chat up the ladies at the door. "Whatchoo drinkin'? Sex on The Beach?"
--Uh, no, this is cranberry and pineapple juice.
"Just beach then."
--Yeah.

Moment 2: Minute Maid

I meet Nadine and ask her where the other comics are. "It's all you."
It's just me?
"Yeah, you're the performer!"
--Oh. I uh...so how much time do you want me to do?
"How much do you want to do?"
--(Ten) I'll do 20.

I ended up doing 25 by, as Luke calls it, pulling some jokes out of my anus. I have successfully sustained audiences with a longer feature set, but I thought I was going to be a part of a lineup, and had only prepared a tight ten. Lesson to the rookies: prepare for a longer set no matter where you are. Also leave Nadine alone. See Moment 3.

Moment 3: Know Your Audience

I think Nadine thought I was nervous, either because I was walking around a lot or pestering her while she mingled. Do you know Del? Do you know Robin Cloud? She looked at me, touched my arm and said, "Do you know who you're performing for?" I had seen everyone in the room, but I looked around again for her benefit.
--Yeah! I'm gonna be on Snatchtastic at Angels in Kings this Sunday. It's run by Robin Cloud. Do you know her?
"Okay, good..." and she walks away.

Allow me to let you, the reader, pan around the hypothetical room.

She would be there

She would be there

She might-could be there

(Indelible memories of Set It Off)

And who sticks out like a sore thumb?

Old blue eyes. He keeps leaning towards me and grabbing my hands while he talks to me. I keep pretending I don't know him. I wish he would go talk to the bartender, the only other white man in the room. I tell him to call himself my manager, Carl.

Moment 4: Show time, Synergy

I meet Nakia, the other host and the one who invited me. She puts on headphones, and it's officially a night club scene with low lights and loud music. I am loving the songs she picks! I keep doing the robot, because I'm half-white. Other women are dancing for themselves in the mirrored wall. All of a sudden the music stops and the lights come up. I take the "stage", by moving foot stools and standing in front of the DJ booth, next to the entrance. There is some murmuring and zombies mill about, just like when a school dance is over, and the magic room turns into the cafeterial again. I kick off the set with some audience interaction, and Nadine joins me on the stage while all the other members of the audience chime in. It's like we're all in the ladies room, except one of us has a microphone.

Moment 5: I Told You Know Your Audience

I ask who is dating in the room, and only one hand goes up. It's a promoter I met earlier in the evening, Kenya.
--You, Kenya? What are you doing in here then?
"I like to look,"
--Where's your person?

Several voices repeat, "Person? Person?! Oh Lord..."
--Girl. Woman. Lady you are cheating on. Chick that is not good enough. Hetero guilt stifles the vocabulary.

It was a great night, and one of the most fun audiences I have had in a while. I only lost a portion of them. After applauding in celebration of a girl's birthday, a group of women leaves two jokes in. The birthday girl announces at the door, "I'm really drunk."

She should have tried the Beach.

Sue Balls

Sue Ball had a great performance and line-up at her variety show The Rochelle Show yesterday. The title of this blog is a play on her name. As in Sue has a ball when she's on stage, Sue's got a pair of testicles, Sue be ballin' shot callin' 20 inch rims on her Impala. Whatever you want. The point is this: she kicks up dust on a topic that I hope is rocking the feminism courses in colleges across America...

Anybody have any thoughts on "women in comedy?"...I really could care less about comedy as liberation as much as comedy as a way to crack myself and others up. I know there is a bias. And I'm not looking to overcome it. When I can't keep a straight face cause I'm crackin' myself up onstage, I'm not worried about whether Norman Mailer or Charles Bukowski, or f*** it, Johnny Depp find me complex, or sensual or compelling or confusing or Winona Ryder-esqe or worthy of a liquor binge or a painting or a poem, or a nervous breakdown.

Step into my 8-foot tall, iridescent and undulating circle of parallel universe travel. In this world, all women refuse to give interviews on women in comedy. Reporters are at a loss and just interview female comedians to talk about their work.

In our current world, however, listening to women complain about singling out "Women in Comedy" makes me think of the minoritiest minority performer (a homosexual, disabled little person with vitiligo? An 800lb blind leper with a British accent?) insisting people acknowledge their comedic skills first. "So I cough up gold. SO WHAT? I have a joke about pita pockets that will change your life."

I'm not telling ladies to stop seeking a comparable foothold in the biz, I just don't want to deny my past. We are achieving something that a few generations prior we could not have, so why pretend as if we were always equal? Just because we're beyond slavery doesn't mean blacks should forget it ever happened. Then again, when interviewed, we also should not have to hear, "Let's talk about how unusual it is that you're not a slave anymore."

Women are glorious. Comedy is glorious. Let's celebrate the union.

Chicks & Giggles Renews My Soul

Checked out the Got MILF? special at Chicks & Giggles not too long ago. I've mentioned it before, and it bears repeating, that this is a show that is so fun I still make it out to watch when I'm not in the lineup. It's great to sit back and learn from all the talent. Lisa Landry threw down, and people you've seen on television were there, and ladies about to pop out babies rocked the mic. It was an excellent time, and you should catch it Tuesdays at 8:00 PM at Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction (34 Avenue A, between 2nd & 3rd streets). Luke and I got there early and got a booth to ourselves. Then the stragglers came in, touring comic veterans Pat Canderas and Michele Balan, and asked to squeeze in with us. We watched them giggle over drinks and then haggle over who would treat whom. We were waiting to tease them about picking up our tab, but remembered that joking with comedians is tacky.

Lookit! Pictures!

With Michele Balan, finalist for Last Comic Standing 4

We the You People

The radio jock so shocking I’ve never heard of him, Don Imus, is in hot water because he referred to members of the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos”. He tried to plead his case on Al Sharpton’s radio show and dug the hole deeper when he said, “I can’t get anywhere with you people”. NO! Not You People! Even Michael Richards knows not to say You People.

I have never said You People in my life. Partly because it’s redundant, but also because I know it’s one of the dumbest ways to refer to a group you’re mad at. HO HUM Mr. Imus. Is that the best you can do?

Now if he had said You Blacks, well that would change things. I only like to be marginalized with other blacks during My History Month or Chocolate Night at my local Comedy Club. You Blow-hards would have been more accurate and funny, because political pundits need to be put in their place. You Maggots—that would have been dastardly macabre. You Wascally Wabbits—diluted but heartfelt. In short, You People is tired, racists. Get creative.

Let’s back it up to the first insult. Even white women can have nappy hair after a long, sweaty game. The real problem with the Rutgers comment is that he calls them hos. Did that ever come up on MISTER Sharpton’s show? Doubt it. All you Rutgers women’s b-ball fans, we need to unite and take a stand! Let’s quit putting women down, guys! What do you say? Guys?… Hey…where are all the guys?
